The scene takes place in New York, in a sports club called "Sharkey's", known for its boxing matches where betting was common. The two featured boxers are not professionals, but amateurs, nicknamed "stags", hence the original title of the work.

Bellows' artistic style is part of the tradition of American Realism, with a strong influence of Expressionism, particularly in the graphic representation of the left boxer's face, which evokes the speed and brutality of the fight.

This oil on canvas is now exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art, in the United States.
